Preserving a Legacy: The Magnolia Tree Earth Center

In the 1970s, Carthan founded the Magnolia Tree Earth Center to protect the magnolia tree, which was planted in the 19th century by a former resident. She secured the brownstone buildings for the center with local donations and obtained landmark status for them. Over the years, the center has offered gardening and urban forestry classes and served as a home for other nonprofits. However, recent financial challenges have put the center at risk. The pandemic, coupled with contractor issues, has led to significant fines and the need for urgent repairs.
